This webpage compiles the work led by Professor Mauricio Sánchez-Silva within the School of Engineering – Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering. Professor Sánchez-Silva’s area of expertise is risk analysis and stochastic modelling to support the decision making-process in engineering under uncertain conditions. He works on Probabilistic Risk Analysis (PRA) and approximate measures to estimate potential risks for infrastructure, network systems and industrial facilities. Furthermore, he has experience on estimating risk in complex problems under conditions where information is partial, incomplete and difficult to quantify. Finally, he has been involved in projects where the socioeconomic and environmental contexts play a significant role and, therefore, traditional risk modelling and engineering methods can only be applied partially.
In a recent article, PhD student Lina Leon, ain collaboration with PhD. Andrés Virguez and PhD. Lyssa Freese, address the significance of a more equitable representation of the Global South in the field of climate sciences.
Professor Mauricio Sánchez Silva, along with PhD student Nayled Acuña Coll, recently published a scientific article titled “Management of infrastructure systems: the role of systems thinking and flexibility” in the journal Innovative Infrastructure Solutions
Professor Mauricio Sánchez-Silva will present a seminar on the importance of viewing infrastructure as dynamic systems. Learn how a flexible approach can facilitate an efficient response to unexpected events and enhance infrastructure resilience in the face of future challenges.
